If you know your way around Michigan, the various towns and watering holes mentioned in The Drinking Game may evoke some pretty specific images for you. If you don’t know your way around Michigan, you’ll get a little taste of the surroundings, including some familiar venues in Ann Arbor. However, the book doesn’t fall prey to some of the common weaknesses of “regional fiction”; it is a surprisingly engaging tale of honor and friendship spun around a challenge between an old and younger man, with a backdrop of tradition, nature, and principles of integrity playing a greater role than the “local color”.
